Aquaman Cover to Cover, Part 6: Aquaman (Vol.7) #20 by Alan Davis - 2004

sgComic book artist extraordinaire Alan Davis drew a mere five covers for the current Aquaman series--#s 15-20--and all of them were superb. They were distinct throwbacks to an earlier era of comics, with giant monsters, natural disasters, even Aquaman shrunk down and stuck in a test tube! They were all so nice I had a hard time picking which one was my favorite.

I ended up going with this one because of its poster-like qualities and its palpable sense of fun and adventure--Aquaman and his new sidekick, Lorena (aka Aquagirl) rushing headlong into what is certainly a battle of life and death!

Alan Davis was the original artist picked for the 1986 Aquaman mini-series when he was taken off the book and put on Batman and the Outsiders. And while I wouldn't want to have missed replacement Craig Hamilton's work for the world, it is a shame Alan Davis--who is admittedly an Aquaman fan--didn't get his shot at the character. As you can see, he draws Aquaman really, really well.
