Sketch Week, Part 2: Dan Brereton - January 2000

sgThis awesome, striking piece by Dan Brereton (artist of Thrillkiller, Nocturnals, and lots of other stuff) was given to me as a Christmas present by my then-girlfriend who was friends with Dan. We lived in seperate cities at the time, so when I went to visit in January she layed it on me. Obviously, I was stunned--it was a great gift, and a great painting. Dan really outdid himself.

The original is about 10x15", so to include it in the sketchbook (how could I not?) I had it photographed, printed, and pasted into the book. This and the Cardy/Fradon pieces are on the opening pages of the sketchbook, setting the bar awfully high for future submissions.

But, as we'll see, they kept getting better and better!

Wow! This is, as you saw, truly awesome! I certainly wasn't expecting any paintings of this quality during "Sketch Week." I'm rather stunned by this piece. Brereton did a beautiful job. You're a lucky guy.

Rob,
1. What does your partner say about your Aquaman collection? does she support you collection ?

2. You must be proud of your collection.
Will you sell your collection to another aquaman die hard fan or will you action it off when the time comes.

3. Do you also collect Namor ?

yep! and there's even a story about her (isnt there always?) tied to one of the pieces of merch that will show up here eventually. basically, there wouldn't be this blog without her indirect influence.

i can't imagine anyone wanting it many, many years from now (fingers crossed), so i think itll just end up a bunch of boxes of stuff nobody wants after i go. :(

3. Do you also collect Namor ?
nope. i was introduced to Aquaman via comics and The Super Friends and it was he who struck a chord, for whatever bizarre reason. it's not a conciously water-related thing, as far as i know.

Tracy and i dont really plan on having any kids (other than the four-legged furry kind) so i'm not sure what will happen.

ALL of our friends and relatives do have kids, some of which are real comic fans, so maybe one of these kids in the future will step up and lay claim to all this stuff. one of these kids even did an Aquaman drawing for me, which will appear here sometime. :) so maybe he's laying claim early!
