JLA Plate - 1985
This is an exciting "collector's plate" featuring a few members of the Justice League of America, drawn by the incomparable Jose Luis Garcia Lopez.Aquaman looks quite majestic on his seahorse, Batman looks suitably dour, and I have to say, Red Tornado is a surprising inclusion.
I have another plate like this (that just features Aquaman) and I'm always afraid I'm going to end up breaking them into a thousand pieces.
I'm just saying, I think I would find collecting commemorative plates a very stressful hobby.

Yeah, and Aquaman is just showing off, STANDING on his seahorse. "Look what I can do!" :-)
I've always wanted these. It's kind of odd, because I think GL is redrawn over a Garcia Lopez Superman pose, but it works.
Isn't there a "first appearance" cover image on the back (B&B #28)?

wow, i never noticed that GL is a re-draw of the Superman pose...
the plate is buried deep in storage, and i don't remember seeing anything on the back.

Rob, I have FELT the fear and disappointment you speak of regarding these plates:
A couple of years ago I purchased the Aquaman solo plate off of ebay for 30 bucks. I came with it's own hanging apparatus, and I decided to hang it on my bedroom wall right by the mini Aquaman collection that stands on my dresser. After "securing" the plate to the wall using about a 7-inch nail, I walked out of the room. No sooner had I left my doorway but I heard a sickening crash. As you said, the plate was in approximately 32,984,571 little pieces, as was my heart. Thirty bucks right down the crapper. So a word of warning: if you must display the plates, use a stand on a table!

Not to pick the plate apart, because it's really nice and I'd love to have one myself, but I never noticed how huge that seahorse fin is. I know seahorses don't get huge like that, but normally Arthur's steeds are drawn fairly realistically, size excluded.

I've also got one of these plates (and yes, there is an image of JLA #1 on the back). Funny story about the plate...
I was moving back in 1998. I had everything packed up, but I didn't really have a good box to transport the plate in. So the plate traveled sans-box carefully placed in a car seat. Given that I owned this plate for several years and really loved it (my only collector plate of any kind I owned), I was sort of crazy about protecting it. I apparently ranted to my friends who were helping me move about protecting the plate. I went on and on about how it was really old and irreplaceable. So after being a total plate-protecting-nazi, it got to the new house safe and sound.
Within a day or two of moving, we received some flyer in the mail promoting geek-related merchandise. And lo and behold, right on the cover was an advertisement to order this "irreplaceable" plate I had been freaking out about. Needless to say I had some groveling to do with my friends on that one. :)
